Frequently asked questions

Does my data go anywhere?

No. It stays on your Mac, in the app's folder. There is no user account, no server, no sync. We cannot look at it: technically, we have no access to it.

Three exceptions, all triggered by you:

• prices and logos — only the asset's symbol is sent (AAPL, BTC), never your amounts;
• AI analysis — off by default; if you turn it on, the data for the investment being analysed goes to the provider you chose;
• purchases, handled entirely by Apple.

Is there a subscription?

Yes, for the paid editions. Essential (€29.99 a year) and Premium (€59.99 a year, or €5.99 a month) are subscriptions renewed automatically, taken out and managed in your Apple account. The Pro edition is coming soon. The prices shown on the App Store at the time of purchase prevail. You can cancel at any time from your Apple ID settings: the edition stays active until the end of the paid period, then the app goes back to Free — without deleting anything.

The Free edition never expires: it is limited in scope — one account, the current month — not in time.

Changing edition during the year is done in the App Store, which works out the pro rata itself.

What happens if I change Mac, or reinstall?

Your edition follows you. The "Restore my purchases" button in Settings → About brings it back from your Apple account.

Your data, however, is not in your Apple account: it is on your Mac. To take it with you, do an export or a backup before changing machine — see the Import / Export section.

Do I lose my data if I stay on the free edition?

No. Your data stays intact whatever your edition. Features from a higher edition are unavailable, but nothing is deleted, and the full export is still available.

If you have several accounts and go back to Free, only one stays active — the one you choose with Keep this account — and the others wait, greyed out, outside the calculations. The details are in the Accounts chapter.

An app that held your data hostage would not deserve to be paid for.

Are there ads?

None, in any edition. No ad network, no tracker, no audience measurement. An app that shows your bank accounts has no business being an ad display.

How do I move to a new Mac?

1. On the old one: Import / Export → BudGénie archive → Export.
2. Copy the .budgenie file.
3. On the new one: install BudGénie, double-click the file.
4. Check the preview, choose Replace, confirm.

I have lost a backup's password

It is unreadable for good. That password is stored nowhere and cannot be recovered: it is the price of encryption that leaves us no way in.

Why does my net worth total look wrong?

Three causes, in order of frequency:

1. a loan is not linked to any asset — the per-asset total is then partial, and BudGénie says so;
2. an ownership share — an asset owned at 50% only counts for half;
3. a forgotten account — a savings account that was never entered is missing.

An expense does not appear in the list

Check the account filter at the top of the screen. A transaction assigned to an account other than the filtered one is not shown.

My loan payment is counted twice

You probably entered it by hand and ticked "Create the monthly payment in Expenses" on the loan. Delete one of the two — preferably the one entered by hand: the one created from the loan covers all remaining instalments at once, and deleting it removes the whole series.

Can I change the length of an existing series?

Not directly yet. You need to delete the instalments concerned and create them again. It is a known limitation, on the roadmap.

The app shows months up to 2029

Those are the scheduled instalments of your loans and subscriptions, written in advance. They are not included in exports by default: that is exactly what the "Include upcoming months" box is for.

Where has the "Expenses" tab gone?

There are two now, because they are two different tasks: Planned expenses for what comes back (rent, insurance, subscriptions, loan payments) and Daily expenses for what you enter as you go. Your existing expenses have not moved — they are in planned expenses.

In the same way, the old Net worth tab has been split into Assets, Loans and Net worth: you enter data in the first two, and read it in the third.

Where are the manual and the guided tour?

Settings → User manual: the section expands and its chapters appear in the menu column.

Settings → Tutorial to restart the guided tour. It opens by itself the first time you launch the app, just once; the "Open the tour at next launch" box brings it back.

How do I know the calculations are right?

BudGénie recalculates thirteen identities, plus two per account, every time you change tab, from the raw data, and compares them with what is displayed: total expenses, disposable income, each account's balance, the sum of accounts, the breakdown… A deliberately wrong check is added each time: if it does not fail, it is the verification itself that is broken.

Can BudGénie connect to my bank?

Not yet. Automatic bank connection (PSD2) is planned for the Pro edition. It relies on a licensed provider, paid every month and per user: that is why it is kept for that edition, and only for those who want it.

In the meantime, statement import (CSV, OFX, QIF, PDF) does the same job in a few seconds, in every edition — see the chapter Backup, import and diagnostics.
